I'll be the guinea pig for the movie version, I've played SH2 (based more on symbolism) and SH3 (based more on atomsphere). That should be an easier way for you to experience it.

It is a video game at first, a total of five has already come out (only four is released in the US), now there is a movie coming out based on it within a few months. You don't have to play the games in order since the story is self-contained.

Silent Hill:
Harry travels down to Silent Hill with his daughter. After a freak accident, he discovers his daughter is missing and then goes out and search for her.

Silent Hill 2:
James received a letter from his wife telling him to come to Silent Hill, the beautiful town where the couple spent their honeymoon. The problem is that his wife is already DEAD. To investigate the mystery, he travels down to Silent Hill, only to see it as a ghost town with incredibly dense fog and nightmarish monsters representing various issues residing with him.

Silent Hill 3:
A direct sequel to Silent Hill 1, fast forwarding about a good 15-years, Heather is just a normal girl at the mall, and a simple phone call to her dad will change everything. Her reason for living will change too, and the answers (mainly why she is born) lie in the town of Silent Hill.

Silent Hill: The Room
Don't really know much about this, deals with some guy and his apartment.

Silent Hill: Play Novel
A Gameboy Advance port of the first Silent Hill game. It plays just like those pick-your-own-adventure book. Like go to page 4 for this choice, go to page 100 for the next. You can "play" this game here [link]

Oh yeah, at least from what I saw in the trailer, the movie is loosely based on the first game.
